Dear Parents and Families,
Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a wonderful and joyous winter break! I cannot tell you how grateful I am for getting to spend each day with your amazing children! I am also so thankful for the support of our kind and thoughtful families. Without your support we would not be able to do what we do! Thank you especially to those parents who attended the whole school movie trip, sent in items or volunteered for the classroom party, and to those who sent warm words through e-mails, notes, and gifts. Your thoughtfulness makes me feel so special and loved! You guys are the best!
WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
In writing, we have kicked off a new unit focusing on the genre of realistic fiction! The students are excited to finally get to write stories! The students are learning to develop both external and internal characteristics of characters and plan a story out on a story mountain.
In math, the students will finish up their unit on multiplication and division next week. Our next unit will focus on Place Value in Whole Numbers and Decimals. Please continue to work with your children at home on their multiplication facts up to 10 X 10. They have to have them all memorized fluently by the end of 3rd grade!
This week the students finished up the unit of economics in social studies. We will begin a unit on History of Michigan (one of my favorites!) next week. We will also spend a few days learning about and talking about Martin Luther King Jr. and his important impact on the civil rights movement and fighting with peace for equality for all people.
In science, the students have been busy creating shadows using lamps in Mrs. Talamonti-Burgee's classroom! The science unit is light and sound and the students seem to be having a lot of fun with the hands-on nature of this unit!
2015 in our classroom has started off with a bang! The kids have picked right up where we left off as we get back into our normal routine. There are a few things that I notice that people are forgetting and I have listed them below to remind you and your child:
1) SNACK-Please remember to pack a snack for your child each day SEPARATELY from their lunch. Many students tell me that they ate their snack during lunch and need me to provide them with a snack.
2) HOMEWORK-Please remember that there is nightly homework Monday-Thursday and that it is important to correct your child's homework, SIGN IT, and make sure that they return it to school! As I check in homework and reading logs, some students hardly have any turned in! Please help your child to learn responsibility and to stay consistent with this homework.
3) DRESS FOR THE WEATHER-The students are able to play outside during afternoon recess if the outside temperature with windchill is above 0 degrees Fahrenheit. With that in mind, please make sure that your children come to school with appropriate outdoor clothes for the weather. There are items to borrow in the office including gloves, hats, scarfs, and snow pants if your child forgets.
4) STUDY!-Mrs. Talamonti-Burgee and I spend a great deal of time creating the review tests and pages for tests. The practice test for Math Unit 4 on Multiplication and Division went home on Tuesday. PLEASE take time each night to practice and review for the tests! We send this practice guide home as a resource and it makes a HUGE difference if students review a little bit of it each night until the test! Thank you for your support!
