Internship Year
2008-2009
Red Cedar Elementary
My internship experience at Red Cedar Elementary was enlightening and shaped my views of diversity and acceptance. 46 different nations and 23 different languages are represented at this elementary school. The acceptance and cultural celebration I experienced at this school was inspiring and is something I will carry with me always. During my internship, I participated as the assistant coach of the Red Cedar Rockets Jump Rope Team. This experience provided me with the opportunity to work with more children in the school and become more involved in the community of the school. Additionally, I also worked as a Para-professional for an extended learning time program for writing in third grade. This experience has been invaluable in helping me to develop and motivate struggling writers. During my internship year our class also participated in The Big Zoo Lesson at Potter Park Zoo, a week-long field trip where students get interaction with zookeepers, docents, and have the opportunity to observe an animal's characteristics and habitat. My class also participated in service activities such as singing for and spending time with senior citizens in a retirement home.
Red Cedar Elementary is a multicultural school. Every year the entire school participates in a celebration called The Festival of Cultures. The festival is a celebration of diversity and acceptance for everyone. My internship year was a very rewarding experience for me!
